Military Working Dogs (MWD) are a vital part of the US Armed Forces. These highly trained pups work side by side with their handlers in war zones as trackers or sentries, in search and rescue, explosive detection and so much more.

This non-profit organization has been sending care packages to US military dogs all over the world since 2003. President of the organization, Ron Aiello, says that packages are sent all year round.

Millions of animals in the US are currently in shelters waiting for new homes. However, many people choose not to adopt because they are unsure of what to expect. With some basic knowledge about shelters, however, these common misconceptions can be cleared up. Here are the facts for some of the more prevalent concerns you may have about adopting a pet from a shelter.

MISCONCEPTION: “They won’t have the breed I’m looking for.”

FACT: An estimated 25 percent of dogs in shelters are purebred (humanesociety.org 2014). Also, there are many rescue groups that specialize in finding homes for specific breeds or types of pets.

MISCONCEPTION: “There must be something wrong with them.”

Eric O'Grey knew he was in trouble. His weight had ballooned to 320 pounds, and he was spending more than $1,000 a month on medications for high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol.

In 2010, a physician told him to buy a funeral plot, because he would need it in five years. He was 51 years old.

So he went to talk with a naturopathic doctor about losing weight. She said: Get a shelter dog.

WolfTrax: Walk For a Dog App

Did you know that every time your human takes you on a walk you could be sending money to a local shelter to help other dogs?  It's true!  The WoofTrax app will take your walk and donate money to your favorite shelter!

It couldn't be easier!

How do you start?  Have your human go to the WoofTrax website, click “Get the App” at the top of the page, and install the free Android or iPhone app.

How does it work? Your human just takes the phone with you when you walk, presses the “Start Walking for …” button and the app will keep track of your walk. When your walk is stopped it is credited to your selected shelter or rescue. The more walking for that organization, the more WoofTrax can donate, so please spread the word.  The donations are sent approximately twice a year.

Again, word of mouth is key. The more actively walking with the app the greater the benefit for your favorite rescue or shelter.  So spread the word and let's walk to raise money for other dogs!
